ECommConf ‘09 - Day 2
Posted on | March 4, 2009
I am was at the Emerging Communications Conference going on in San Francisco this week from the 3rd till the 5th of March. Here is the official schedule.
Since I got positive feedback on my Future of Mobile summary I decided to use a similar format for ECommConf. Each talk has a short description and rate.
Here are the reviews by day:
Day 2 (Tuesday, March 4th)
-
Digital Democracy or Plutocracy: Open Technology and the Future of Wireless Communications, Sascha Meinrath, New America Foundation - mostly about the history of communication. I lost interest after that :) - 3
-
Modern Wireless Spectrum Management, Darrin M Mylet, Cantor Fitzgerald - talk about spectrum allocation and usage. Learned some new things - 4
- Extending VoIP to the GSM Air Interface, David A. Burgess, Kestrel Signal Processing - David showed a cool demo of OpenBTS running a GSM base station (to the mobile) from an Asterisk backend. Nice thing for greenfield deployments, not so cool if you have any legacy stuff - 5
-
The Possibilities of White Space “Identifying Information”, Peter Ecclesine, Cisco - skipped this one because I had to answer emails :)
- Non-Obvious Challenges and Opportunities for VoIP and Video on the iPhone, Jan Linden, Global IP Solutions - a word or two on mobile VoIP trends, focuses on iPhone and VoIP for iPhone. - 4
- Cloud Telephony - Why You Need More Than an API, Irv Shapiro, IfByPhone - very energetic talk, about cloud telephony. Explains how cloud telephony is more than putting an Asterisk instance on Amazon EC2. - 4+
- Next-gen Telephony Application Development with Adhearsion,Jay Phillips, Adhearsion - talk about Adhearsion as the middle layer between telephony and applications. - 4
- Skype and Asterisk: What it Means for Business Communications,Mark Spencer, Digium - interesting info about how Asterisk and Skype are integrated. - 4+
- The Service Innovation Ecosystem, Chris Mairs, MetaSwitch - Chris is blind and made a joke about it. Great spirit and nice presentation with insights on the components of a successful application. - 5
- IP Video Communication Issues and Solutions, Amir Zmora, Radvision - good presentation exposing many problems with video conferencing and how to overcome them. Shows some details on how Radvision’s solution works. Nice. - 4
- Mobile Phones Reveal the Behavior of Places and People, Tony Jebara, Columbia University & Sense Networks - talk about how to get location data and use it. They collect data from the “real” world and look for interesting patterns. - 4+
- Panel: Voice 2.0 - New Ways to Monetize Voice - not really any news here. By the way - panels should be composed by people who will argue about something, not just nod and tap each other on the shoulders. It is much more fun to see different views supported by good arguments. - 2+
- Service Oriented Communications (SOC): Integrating Human Capital with Business Processes, Todd Landry, NEC Sphere - very interesting demo of an emergency handling system. The system could use some polishing, but still it was nice to see an innovative solution taking advantage of existing technology. - 5
- Communications Enabling Business Processes to Make and Save Money, Graham Brierton, Voicesage - Graham presented a web hosted CEBP solution. - 3+
- Creating New Expressive Social Mediums on the iPhone, Ge Wang, Smule/Stanford - Fantastic presentation by Ge Wang about his academic work and his new startup - the world (at least mobile world) known Smule. Ge Wang showed a demo of two very cool products on stage - the Sonic Lighter and Ocarina. I have to give him additional credit because he played Ocarina live :) - 5+
- The Future of Content & Telecoms: Flat Rate Content Bundles and Social Media - the Next Big Thing?, Gerd Leonhard, MediaFuturist.com - Another great talk with some insightful information about potential business models of the future. Good presenting style, except for some slides which were too packed with information. Anyway Gerd’s blog is well worth reading. - 4+
- How To Do Things With Voice, Trevor Baca, Jaduka - skipped this one. Sorry :(
- Harnessing Latent Mobile Phone Resources For Wireless Digital Telemetry Applications, David Beckemeyer, Televolution
- Visualizing Voice, Karrie Karahalios, UIUC - very interesting presentation about her work.
- Structural Bypass - A Simple, Proven Path to “Real Broadband”, Brough Turner, Ashtonbrooke - had to answer a couple of emails and did not really listen. Sorry :(
- The Park Bench Manifesto: Why We Want To Kill Off The PSTN, Dan York, Voxeo - inspiring talk about the new generation of voice communication and services by Dan who should really have been the first speaker of the conference. His style was very smooth with many slides, quickly changing and following the story. Well done Dan ;) - 5
- Aligning Handsets and Networks for Mobile Web Services, Dean Bubley, Disruptive Analysis
