This is a question I’ve been asking myself for quite some time and has reached the peak yesterday when @lowk3y told me that he is seriously thinking about stopping POT (weekly open source talks in Kiberpipa).

Since coding in PHP or hacking with simple web APIs is not a “real nerd” thing I am wondering if there are any youngsters around that are interested in more basic things like programming processors, developing operating systems and so on. Don’t get me wrong, I have incredible respect for top web developers and I am just wondering where are the basic technology guys - the ones who love the command line, low level stuff and so on.

It looks like just a small bit of the population is willing to tackle difficult problems and learn the basics, but if this trend keeps going on in a couple of years we will not have any skilled people to move the development of basic things forward. Why? Because the simple rule of demand and supply applies. If there will be just a few skilled people in this basic fields their cost will be enormous. This will probably have an impact on the advancing of technology sooner or later.

Just a thought I had to share, I might be totally wrong, so feel free to ignore this post.
