Why iPad’s Closed, Unitasking and Non-Geeky Experience Might Not Be Such a Bad Idea

Today I have been witness to a funny fact. I had to take my MacBook Pro to the doctor due to a failed ethernet port (quite common in late 2008 and early 2009 MBPs) and since in Slovenia we do not have Apple stores, I was able to share the line with someone who I can easily label as an average PC/computer user.

The guy was having a problem with his computer, when playing YouTube videos (not PornTube?! :)) that originated from Flash (I know, since that is a quite common problem), but he insisted that the nice folks at the repair shop should change his graphic and audio card to fix the problem. This made me think.

Common users don’t really care about Flash, browsers, not even operating systems. To them is just “the computer” and if something goes wrong, even due to badly written software,  the computer does not work. For such users a device that is closed and where the software basically is the computer might not be a bad idea.

Do not get me wrong, I like open software and systems much more, but I can easily imagine that most people just don’t care. They just want products that do not give them problems and let them watch porn in an easy manner, and we should deliver that to make them happy.
